UTS North Sydney's Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup team convinced itself it has what it takes to match it with the competition's best after defeating a UNSW side containing short-form specialist Dan Christian on Sunday.

In the only game completed on a wet and soggy day in Sydney, the Bears restricted Christian to just 13 and his side to 4-139 from their 20 overs at David Phillips Field.

The visitors reached their target with six wickets and nine balls to spare.

It was Norths' first win in the Sydney Sixers conference and a much-needed confidence boost.

"Our T20 record is not that good so we're always a bit nervous chasing," captain Justin Avendano admitted.

"It's a big win for us. This will give us a lot of self-belief.

"Normally in T20 cricket someone stands out but this was an all-round team performance."

The Bears fielded four spinners despite the greasy conditions, with Jack James (1-17 from 3 overs) taking the prized wicket of Christian.

"He was getting himself set and middling the ball and we got a bit lucky," Avendano said.

"The first time he tried to hit a six he mis-hit one to short mid-wicket.

"He doesn't have many weaknesses so it was a big wicket."

Openers Tom Jagot (24 from 19 balls) and Brent Atherton (36 from 38) laid the platform for a successful run chase, with Aiden Bariol (29 off 17) Avendano (30 not out off 23) and James (14 from 13) finishing off the job.

Christian took 2-22 from his four overs.

The celebratory beers at Randwick pub The Dog tasted extra sweet when Norths realised theirs was the only game to get on in Sydney.

Avendano said: "We noticed everyone else was off so it was an important game for both teams.

"A loss would have made things really hard for us."

In all, three Sydney Sixers Conference games and four Sydney Thunder Conference matches were abandoned due to the weather.

Rounds four and five of the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup is scheduled for next Sunday.
